The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence® is a leading-edge Order of queer nuns. Since our first appearance in San Francisco on Easter Sunday, 1979, the Sisters have devoted ourselves to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment. We believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty and we use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit.
The Grand Canyon Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (GCSPI) has the vision to unite, elevate, and empower the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) community throughout Arizona. Our primary role and pledge is cooperative support of every facet of the GLBT community through fundraising, entertainment and education throughout Arizona. The family that created us is the one we honor with our Sacred Sisterly Identity. We are a bit decadent, rather showy, often naughty, and always ready to give you a hand. We give up the guilt of spending too much on a yard of beaded chiffon.
We know how important it is to be seen with the right people, so we will be there with you when we can. As with any Sister, we start with the basic black. We add a touch of glitz, a few feathers, signature white face and of course COLOR! Just add Sacramental Cosmos, and there we are. Name is key; it reflects our passions and protects us from being thought of as too straight. From our veils to our wimple we'll be sure everyone knows how important it is to be an individual. We strongly believe that each of us has a path to follow. We all, at some point, find a way to help our sisters and brothers to have a rich and rewarding life without guilt and shame. By presenting ourselves in a comedic and flamboyant display, we demonstrate the principles of "life without guilt" to all we touch. We strongly believe that our lives belong to each of us to fill with love, laughter, self respect and indeed Indulgence. We present our own fundraising events throughout the year and are pleased to offer our presence to the events of others in the community as time allows.
HISTORY IN THE MAKING The Grand Canyon Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence came to life as the Missionary Order of the Grand Canyon Sisters in 2007. Our first year was an exciting one, where we learned how to be nuns, how to raise funds, and how to minister to our community. Some nuns traveled, some stayed home. We learned how to work together, and most importantly, how to fulfill our promises to stamp out stigmatic guilt and promulgate universal joy. Below are some links to see what has happened with the Sisters over the past year. GCSPI would like to thank Stephen Bloom for designing our beautiful logo! In 2009, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence celebrated 30 years of comforting the disturbed and disturbing the comfortable. Over the last three decades, The Sisters have grown from a small band of activists and performers in San Francisco to a worldwide organization dedicated to the expiation of stigmatic guilt and the promulgation of universal joy. With houses and missions all over the world, the SPI family is still growing.
